Immesh magazine is an experiment in generating alternative forms of thinking about ecology and climate change. We aim to deconstruct philosophy, literature, science, art, and history in a relevant and engaging manner so that we can conjure new ways to perceive and proceed into our uncertain future.

Our mission is hopeful. We want to educate and inspire, appreciate and enjoy the wealth of stirring content, recognise and wonder about the possibilities that exist and might come to exist, and gain access to our collective tools and resources to feel better equipped on our journey.

As climate change is often defined using terminology such as “world-altering” and “world-affecting”, it seems the solution lies in equally momentous efforts. We believe that hope and action, in any and every form, are more exciting and interesting on a smaller scale. Looking not necessarily at the individual but at the local ecologies with which humans and non-humans find a way to provide their unique contribution to re-imagining the problem at hand. Each publication has its own theme (all the while relating to ecology and climate change) and offers stories, poetry, opinions, art, photography and more.

The idea of “immesh” comes from theories of the meshwork. Tim Ingold coined the term to describe a composition of relationships that exist upon “lines of becoming” – in essence, the idea that everything is interconnected, ongoing and non-hierarchical. "Immesh" is the active verb form of this idea; it represents the act of entangling something within a mesh.

We are taking this as our point of origin to explore the ongoing, unfinished and open links within and in between our lives. Extending beyond intersectionality, this magazine aims to recognise existing entanglements and create new ones in the process. Every contributor, editor, reader, printer, story, picture and idea that composes this magazine, from the human to non-human, from tangible objects to theories and thoughts, exists within the meshwork.

While our mission begins here – and can be defined as one that inspires hope about our future amidst climate change – it may alternate, shift and grow in unpredictable ways. We invite everyone to be a part of the meshwork and welcome your brilliant minds and interesting thoughts to help us on our collective journey
